Home Gym set up
Dumbbells, bench, rack, and flooring — sorted by the space you actually have. From the corner in the living room to the garage, everything ready to ship from a Swiss warehouse.
A functioning home gym needs three things: adjustable weight, a Shelf or bench and Floor. Up to about 6 m², an adjustable dumbbell set with a stand is sufficient. From 6 m², an adjustable bench is added, and from 12 m², a barbell, bumper plates, and a rack. Regardless of the size, the flooring is the part people forget most often — and regret the most.

Fully assembled
If you don't want to search and gather them individually
Four bundles from the best-selling combinations — coordinated with each other and cheaper than the individual parts.
If space is the main problem
Digital resistance instead of iron
The Voltra generates resistance electronically instead of using weights — from a device weighing just a few kilos. For everyone who cannot or does not want to store iron: wall-mounted, rack-mounted, or completely mobile. More about this in Overview of the digital cable machine.
Small, cheap, effective
Supplement for little money
Bands, suspension trainers, and small equipment take up no space and cover what dumbbells cannot: warm-up, mobility, core, jumping power. In every sixth order, one of these items is in the shopping cart — usually together with the main device, not later individually.

The one decision
Adjustable, hex, urethane, or barbell?
Almost every home gym starts with this question. It determines space requirements, budget, and how far you will get with it.
| Variant | Space requirement | Weight shift | upper limit | Expandable | Goes well with |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adjustable dumbbell | very small | Just a second, on the device | 24 or 40 kg per dumbbell | limited | Corner, apartment, little space |
| Hex dumbbells (cast iron) | medium, needs a stand | immediately grab the dumbbell | depending on the sentence | Piece by piece | Studio quality, does not roll away |
| Urethane dumbbells | medium, needs a stand | immediately grab the dumbbell | depending on the sentence | Piece by piece | Studio-quality, classic round dumbbells |
| Barbell + weights | tall, 2.20 m long | Change discs | virtually open | anytime | Basement, garage, strength building |
Summary: If you have limited space, go with the adjustable dumbbell. If you work with changing weights and have the space, fixed dumbbells are more convenient—cast iron is the more affordable option, while urethane is more durable and has less odor. If you want to lift heavy, you cannot avoid the barbell and will then also need a rack and flooring.

Frequently Asked Questions
Setting up a home gym: the most important answers
How much space do I need for a home gym?
For an adjustable dumbbell setup with dumbbells and a stand, up to 6 m² is plenty — the footprint itself is smaller, and you need the rest for movement. With an incline bench, you should plan for 6 to 12 m². A barbell rack requires 12 m² or more because the bar is 2.20 m long and you need clearance on all sides. More important than the floor space is often the ceiling height: for overhead work in the rack, you should have well over 2.30 m.
Where do I start if I'm only buying one device?
With adjustable weight. An adjustable dumbbell covers the range of an entire rack of dumbbells, takes up barely any space, and can be used for practically any exercise. Only after that come the bench, the floor, and, if applicable, the barbell. Anyone who starts with a large piece of equipment instead usually takes up more space than they gain exercises.
Cast iron or urethane for fixed dumbbells?
Cast iron hex dumbbells are cheaper and completely sufficient for home use. Urethane dumbbells have a significantly more abrasion-resistant coating, do not smell, and retain their appearance even with daily use — which is why they are the standard in gyms. If the dumbbells are kept in a living area or used heavily, urethane is usually worth the extra cost.
Do I really need a floor?
In most cases, yes. The flooring protects the subfloor from placed and falling weights, dampens impact sound for the neighbors, and provides benches and racks with a secure grip. For a dumbbell setup, individual 0.8 cm mats under the storage area are sufficient. For barbells and dropping weights, you need thicker rubber flooring or a platform as a drop zone. The flooring is the item that people omit most often and end up buying later anyway.
Can I train in the basement or in the apartment without disturbing the neighbors?
Yes, with the right measures. The key is decoupling from the floor: thicker rubber flooring significantly dampens impact sound, and bumper plates absorb the impact when dropping weights better than cast iron plates. Additionally, it helps to set weights down in a controlled manner instead of dropping them, and not placing the workout area directly against a shared wall.
Adjustable dumbbell or a set of individual dumbbells?
The adjustable dumbbell wins on space, the set on handling. Anyone who frequently switches between weights during a workout—such as in supersets—is faster with individual dumbbells because no adjustment is needed. Anyone who works out in a corner and doesn't have the space for a rack with eight pairs of dumbbells will take the adjustable one. Details in Dumbbell Buying Guide.
How much does a sensible home gym cost?
A functional starter setup with an adjustable dumbbell and mats is in the low three-figure range. With a bench and barbell, you are in the mid three-figure to lower four-figure range, and with a rack, platform, and bumper plates, it goes above that. The curated bundles on this page are cheaper than the sum of their individual parts.
Do bumper plates fit on every barbell?
Only for 50 mm bars. Bumper plates have an inner ring with a 51 mm hole diameter, meaning they fit on all standard Olympic barbells and curl bars. They are not suitable for 30 mm bars — for those, you need 30 mm weight plates. Which bumper plate is right for you is explained by the Bumper Plates Advisor.
Is a rack worth it for home?
As soon as you are doing heavy squats or bench presses alone, yes — the safety arms are then not a matter of comfort, but of safety. Below that workload, you can get very far with dumbbells and a bench. If the room is used for dual purposes, a folding wall rack is the space-saving intermediate solution. The differences between the designs are explained in the Rigs and Racks Advisor.
How fast is the delivery, and can I pick it up?
We ship within 1 to 3 business days directly from our Swiss warehouse. Large appliances are shipped by freight carrier. Pickup is after Pick-up times possible in Liestal, and anyone who wants to view devices beforehand can book a Showroom appointment.
