Sling trainer or TRX: What the difference is and what you need

Most people search for TRX and mean a training device. In fact, they are looking for a generic type that is available starting at CHF 35. What matters is not the label on the strap, but where you hang it.

In short

TRX is a brand name, suspension trainer is the category. Both refer to the same principle: two adjustable straps at an anchor point, the resistance comes from your body weight and your angle to the floor. For home workouts, a strap for CHF 35 is completely sufficient. The crucial thing is not the brand, but the attachment.

Brand versus generic

What is the difference between a suspension trainer and TRX?

A suspension trainer is a piece of exercise equipment consisting of two length-adjustable straps with handles that hangs from a single anchor point and uses the user’s own body weight as resistance. TRX is not a separate type of equipment, but rather the brand name of the American manufacturer that popularized the concept starting in 2005. The difference between the terms is therefore the same as that between „Papiertaschentuch“ and „Tempo.“ Anyone searching for “TRX band” or “buy TRX” is generally not looking for a specific manufacturer, but rather for a piece of equipment of this design. Technically, the products differ in strap width, adjustment mechanism, and handle padding, not in their operating principle. The Resistance band trainer for CHF 35.00 works on the same angle principle as any other brand-name device.

Practically speaking, this means: The question „TRX or suspension trainer“ is not a buying decision, but a misunderstanding. The real buying decision lies two levels deeper and has three parts. First: Can your strap handle your body weight. Second: Do you have an anchor point that holds. Third: Is bodyweight training even the right tool for your goal, or would a band or a dumbbell be more appropriate. If you are unsure about point three, the Resistance Bands Buying Guide the affordable alternatives.

Ability and Limits

What a suspension trainer can do and where its limits lie

A sling trainer works on pulling and pushing movements of the entire body, and you can adjust the load continuously by changing your angle to the floor. The flatter you stand or lie, the more of your body weight is suspended from the handles. This is the major advantage over fixed weights: You don’t need weight levels because you adjust the resistance in centimeters. A second advantage is the instability, since both straps hang freely and your core must help stabilize every movement. The strap in our lineup measures 270 cm, weighs 1.2 kg, and is approved for users weighing up to 160 kg. It’s made of nylon, is latex-free, and comes with a carrying bag and a door anchor. The limitation of this principle arises when you need a real additional load: it will never be heavier than your body weight.

The second limitation is design-related and is often overlooked when purchasing. A sling trainer has a connecting loop that links both sides to the anchor point to prevent the straps from slipping. It is precisely this connection that makes it unsuitable for exercises where the hands must work independently of each other. Ring dips, plank holds, and anything related to ring gymnastics shouldn’t be done on a connected strap with soft foam grips. Instead, use Wooden gymnastics rings: two completely separate rings, each 23.5 cm in diameter and 32 mm thick at the handle, also priced at CHF 35. This is not a more expensive version of the same tool, but a different tool altogether.

Because the rings aren’t connected, you can perform support positions, ring rows with rotation, and dips—exercises that a sling trainer simply can’t accommodate due to its design. Ideal for: Calisthenics, ring exercises, dips, and planks.

Purchase criteria

How to Tell If a Suspension Trainer Is Any Good

There are five characteristics that distinguish a harness suitable for everyday use from an annoying one, and none of them is the brand name. First, the rated load capacity—it must be higher than your body weight, not just barely below it. Second, the adjustment mechanism, because you’ll be using it for almost every exercise change. Third, a balancing loop that prevents one side from shortening and the other from lengthening under tension. Fourth, the grip padding, because a bare strap will dig into the palm of your hand during sets of more than ten repetitions. Fifth, the included accessories—specifically a door anchor, without which you can’t get started in a rental apartment. The table shows how these five points can be assessed for a specific piece of equipment. You can find more bands and straps in the Fitness band category.

The real crux of the matter

Where do you safely anchor the suspension trainer?

A suspension trainer is only as safe as its anchor point, and in almost all cases of buyer’s remorse, that’s the problem—not the strap. There are four common options. The included door anchor is placed over a closed door and works without tools, but requires a door that doesn’t open toward you. A wall-mounted pull-up bar also supports the strap and gives you more headroom. A screw-in anchor point on the wall or ceiling is the most stable and flexible solution because you can work freely around the anchor point. Outdoors, you can use a tree branch or a post, though you’ll have to judge for yourself what’s sturdy enough. The same rule applies to all four options: It’s the surface that matters, not the accessory.

Here’s a calculation you should do before buying. The strap measures 270 cm. On a standard-height door, a door anchor is mounted about 200 cm above the floor. When fully extended, the handles will rest about 70 cm off the floor, so you’ll almost always need to trim the strap. For rowing while standing, you’ll want the handles at hip height—roughly 100 cm—which means about 100 cm of usable remaining length and 170 cm in the adjustment range. That’s exactly why the adjustment mechanism isn’t just a minor detail—it’s the component you’ll be adjusting most often. And here’s another figure to put things in context: The Mounting point for wall and ceiling It can hold 250 kg, and the strap is rated for 160 kg. So the weakest link in the chain is the strap, and above both of them is the wall, to which none of these figures apply.

Here is how to proceed with a fixed installation:

  • Check the substrate: Concrete and solid brick are suitable; drywall and hollow blocks are not suitable without special fasteners.
  • Choose a spot: Make sure there is at least 2 m of space in length and 1 m in width around the point so that you don't bump into anything when you're leaning to one side.
  • Mount the attachment point using the four supplied screws and suitable wall plugs for your substrate.
  • Apply body weight while standing and pull it sharply before going into a lean for the first time.
  • Before each training session, briefly check the seams, buckles, and carabiners.

The installation of a load-bearing fixture belongs in expert hands if you are unsure about the substrate. Anyone who does not want to or is not allowed to drill holes can use the Wall-Mounted Pull-Up Bar I won't go any further with that either, because it's also bolted on, so I'll stick with the door anchor. Additional suspension and bodyweight accessories are available in the Conditioning category.

Suspension trainer or resistance band: which one works best for you?

The suspension trainer requires an anchor point and uses your body weight, while the resistance band doesn’t need one and relies on tension. Almost everything else follows from that. If you don’t have a sturdy anchor point in your apartment and don’t want to drill holes, a resistance band is the better choice—even if the suspension trainer sounds more versatile. If you want to pull and push your entire upper body against your full body weight, no resistance band can match the sling, because the resistance with a band fluctuates with the stretch instead of remaining constant. Price-wise, the two are close, so that’s not a deciding factor. The Resistance Band Set costs CHF 25, and the strap costs CHF 35. The difference is in the mounting, not the price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Suspension trainers and TRX: the most important answers

Is a cheap suspension trainer just as good as a TRX?

For home training, yes, because the operating principle is identical: body weight, angle, an anchor point. Differences lie in strap width, adjustment mechanism, and grip padding, not in the training effect. Instead of the brand name, check the approved load capacity, whether an equalizing loop is installed, and whether a door anchor is included. These three points matter in everyday use.

How much weight can a suspension trainer hold?

Our suspension trainer is approved for a user weight of up to 160 kg. More important than this number is the anchor point: the steel attachment point holds 250 kg, but the wall or ceiling behind it only holds as much as its material and anchors allow. If you have any doubts about the substrate, installation should be left to professional hands.

Can I attach a suspension trainer to any door?

No. The door anchor only works on a closed, sturdy door that does not open in your training direction. Light hollow-core doors, sliding doors, and glass doors are unsuitable. Lock the door or train from the side it does not open toward, and check the security of the anchor before every set.

Does it require drilling for the suspension trainer?

No, the included door anchor requires no tools and is designed for rental apartments. Drilling is only worth it once you have a permanent training space: The CHF 10 anchor point gives you freedom of movement around the suspension point instead of tying you to a doorway.

Is a suspension trainer suitable for beginners?

Yes, precisely because you regulate the load through your angle instead of weight plates. The more upright you stand, the easier the exercise becomes, and you progress in centimeters instead of kilograms. This makes the same harness usable for the first day of training and for advanced users, without you having to buy extra accessories.

Suspension trainer or gymnastic rings: which is better?

That depends on whether you want suspension points. The suspension trainer links both sides via an equalization loop and is suitable for pulling and pushing while leaning. Gymnastic rings hang separately and allow dips, support holds, and ring gymnastics. With the same price of CHF 35, your training goal decides, not your budget.

Can I use the suspension trainer outside?

Yes, a sturdy branch or a solid post is sufficient as an anchor point. Watch out for rough bark and sharp edges because they will chafe the nylon strap, and place a cloth underneath if necessary. Store dry after training: chronic moisture is the most common reason why a strap is retired prematurely.

Ready for your harness training?

The suspension trainer is in stock in Liestal and comes with a door anchor and bag, so you don't need anything else to get started.
