Jump rope for adults: which length and which rope suit you

A jump rope costs less than a morning snack and is still the most common mispurchase in fitness accessories. Usually it's due to the length, sometimes the rope type. Here is how to choose both correctly.

In short

For adults, a jump rope is the right size when it is about 100 cm longer than your height: a height of 170 cm results in a rope of about 270 cm. Those who jump faster shorten the extra length to about 75 cm. Adjustable steel cables cover every size, while fixed PVC ropes are available at Fitness-Flohmarkt in 210, 240, 270, and 300 cm.

The length

What rope length matches your height?

The appropriate rope length is determined by your height plus an extra allowance of about 100 cm. You can check this figure against the product range: The adjustable speed ropes in Jump rope assortment are 300 cm long and, according to the product specifications, designed for heights up to 200 cm. The difference of 100 cm is precisely the extra length that brings the handles to armpit height when standing upright. For a height of 170 cm, this lands you at around 270 cm of rope, and for 185 cm at around 285 cm. Those who jump cleanly and quickly work with less extra length: around 75 cm places the handles at sternum height, the rope runs flatter and faster, but forgives less as a result. Neither is a hard rule, but rather a starting point. You buy an adjustable rope in one length and adjust it afterward, whereas you have to choose a fixed-length rope correctly right from the start.

At Gymnastics PVC Speed Jump Rope you decide once when buying, because there are four fixed lengths, each in its own color: 210 cm is green, 240 cm is pink, 270 cm is yellow, and 300 cm is blue. For studios, schools, and clubs, this color code is practical because you can see from two meters away which length is in the basket. For you at home, it means: measure correctly once. If you are between two values, take the longer option. A rope that is slightly too long drags audibly across the floor and costs speed, while one that is too short hits your heels and can no longer be corrected. Which other product groups also require a decision, you can find in the Overview of all buying guides.

The introduction

How to adjust your jump rope in three steps

You adjust an adjustable jump rope in three steps, and you need nothing for it except the rope and a flat surface. Stand with one foot on the middle of the rope, pull both handles straight up, and see where the handle ends land. Armpit level is the starting point for beginners, at the height of the sternum is the setting for anyone who wants to jump fast and cleanly. If the rope is too long, you open the end screws in the handle, pull the wire through a bit, and screw it back on. When the Basic Speed Jump Rope and with both speed ropes with steel cables, this works by hand, without tools. The important part is the last step, which many people skip: the protruding wire has to go, otherwise it hits with every revolution and disrupts the momentum.

  1. Place one foot in the center of the rope and pull both handles straight up.
  2. Read length: Handle ends at armpit height for entry, at sternum height for speed.
  3. Loosen the end screws, pull the wire through, tighten the screws, cut off the excess.

Only cut the wire after you have tested the length over several sets. There is no going back. With a rope of fixed length, the third step is omitted entirely, and the first test is already decided at the time of purchase.

The rope type

How to recognize a good jump rope

You can recognize a good jump rope by four things: rope material, rope diameter, handles, and the bearing at the handle ends. A PVC-coated steel cable with a 2.5 mm diameter runs fast and cuts through the air, but forgives hardly any mistakes and stings noticeably on the calf if you miss. A PVC or steel rope with a 5 mm diameter is slower, heavier, and more forgiving because you can feel the rotation more clearly. The handle determines control: 15 cm long aluminum handles sit more steadily in the hand than short plastic handles, but cost more. And the swivels determine whether the rope runs smoothly at high speed or twists up. 360° ball-bearing joints are standard today, except for the cheapest gymnastics ropes. To be honest: all ropes at Fitness-Flohmarkt are speed ropes. We do not carry braided ropes with plastic beads or weighted heavy ropes.

  • CHF 5.00
  • Steel cable, 5 mm
  • 3 m, adjustable
  • Handle 12.5 cm plastic
  • 360-degree swivel joint
  • 0.2 kg

The most affordable adjustable rope in the range and the right first rope for most people. The thicker 5 mm rope turns slower than a 2.5 mm wire, and that is precisely what helps at the beginning: you can feel where the rope is instead of just guessing. Designed for heights up to 200 cm.

Ideal for: Beginners, returning practitioners, and anyone who wants to find out if jump rope is their thing.

The only rope here without adjustment and without a swivel. In return, it comes in four lengths, color-coded, and in a resealable can. It turns a bit more sluggishly than a bearing-mounted rope, but it withstands group use and doesn't get lost.

Ideal for: Studios, clubs, schools, and anyone who doesn't want to hire.

The fastest rope in the lineup. The thin 2.5 mm steel cable and the 15 cm long aluminum handles with ball bearings make all the difference at high speeds. The slightly textured grip area helps when hands get sweaty. Adjustable for heights up to 200 cm.

Ideal for: Cross-training, boxing, and everyone working on their cadence.

Technically close to premium, but with molded plastic handles instead of aluminum and an added weight in the handle that you can remove. With the weight you feel the rotation more clearly, without it, it becomes lighter and faster. Handy if you want to try both.

Ideal for: For those who haven't decided between control and speed.

The comparison

Which rope suits which goal?

The decision comes down to two things: rope diameter and adjustability. If you are just starting out or getting back into it after years away, get a 5 mm rope because you can feel the rotation and mistakes are less often paid for with a whack to the calf. If you can already jump continuously for several minutes and are working on your frequency, get a 2.5 mm steel rope with ball bearings. Whether you choose aluminum or plastic handles is a matter of personal preference and not a matter of performance. You need adjustability whenever multiple people are using the same rope or you don't want to commit to a single length yet. Fixed lengths are worthwhile if you want to have multiple ropes ready for different heights, such as in a club. Further accessories for intervals and conditioning sessions are located in the Conditioning category.

Space and ground

What else you need for jump rope

Except for the rope, you primarily need vertical space and a floor that can withstand both: your landing and the rope. To calculate the ceiling height, you do the math like this: height plus about 10 cm for the jump-off plus a good 30 cm so the rope clears your head freely. With a height of 180 cm, this results in about 2.20 m of clearance, measured at the lowest point, meaning under lamps, beams, and pipes. The space to the side is easier to check: stretch out your arms and turn around once. Where you don't hit anything, you can jump. For the floor, rubber, wood, or a floor protection mat ideal, because they somewhat cushion the impact and protect the plastic coating. Which thickness is suitable for what is stated in the Flooring buying guide.

Concrete, asphalt, and tiles work, but they quickly wear down the coating. Anyone jumping outdoors should do so with a PVC rope rather than a 2.5 mm steel cable for CHF 15. Shoes with some cushioning in the forefoot help at the beginning. Barefoot on hard ground is something for later.

And the honest counter-advice: If you are working out in an apartment with neighbors below you, a jump rope is the wrong choice. Rope skipping produces impact sound with every jump that no mat can completely absorb. The same applies if your knees or Achilles tendons are already causing issues. In both cases, a machine with consistent resistance will get you further, such as a rowing or air resistance machine from the Cardio Department. That costs more, but it's what makes cardio at home possible in the first place.

Recommendation

What is worth it for whom

Beginner at home

You want to know if jump rope is right for you without spending a lot. Take this adjustable beginner's rope for CHF 5.-, adjust it to armpit height and leave the wire uncut for the first few weeks.

Studio, club, school

You need several ropes for different body sizes and don't want to readjust anything. Make yourself from the Jump rope department two PVC ropes each in 240, 270, and 300 cm. The color code makes sorting unnecessary.

Cross-training and boxing

You jump for several minutes at a time and work on your frequency. Wire rope with 2.5 mm wire and aluminum handle is the right choice here, set at sternum height.

Undecided between both

You want speed, but you don't want to sacrifice grip feel. The Ergo model with removable additional weight allows you to test both without buying two ropes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions we receive about this

How do I adjust the correct jump rope length?

Stand with one foot in the center of the rope and pull both handles straight up. For beginners, the ends of the handles should be at armpit height, and for fast jumping, at the level of the breastbone. If the rope is too long, loosen the end screws in the handle, pull the wire through, and cut off the excess.

What is the difference between a PVC rope and a steel cable?

A PVC rope is thicker, heavier, and slower; a plastic-coated steel rope is thinner and significantly faster. The PVC rope in our assortment measures 5 mm in diameter, while the two fast speed ropes measure 2.5 mm. For beginners, the thicker rope is more comfortable because you can feel the rotation. For speed, you need the thin one.

Why does my jump rope constantly get caught on my feet?

In most cases, the rope is set too long. A rope that is too long drags on the floor, loses tension, and returns too late. Check the length with the armpit-height test, shorten it by ten centimeters if necessary, and make sure you turn from the wrist instead of the shoulder.

On what surface can I jump rope?

Best on rubber flooring, wood, or a floor protection mat. These floors absorb the impact a bit while also protecting the rope's plastic coating. Concrete, asphalt, and tiles do work, but they quickly wear down the coating and pass every impact unfiltered to the knees and ankles.

What jump rope length is right for kids?

The rule of height plus about 100 cm also applies to children. The shortest fixed length in the range is 210 cm, which is suitable for a height of about 110 cm. From a height of around 140 cm, the 240 length is correct. An adjustable rope can grow with the child over the years.

Do I need to cut off the protruding wire?

Yes, after adjusting, the protruding wire should be removed. If it gets stuck in the handle or sticks out, it will hit with every rotation, slow down the swing, and can come loose over time. However, only cut it after you have tested the length over several sets, because you can't go back.

Length determined, rope type decided?

Then all that is missing is the rope. All models are available from Swiss stock.

Why does shipping cost more than usual?

We completely understand if the amount comes as a bit of a surprise at first. When buying clothes or books, people are used to low shipping costs. However, fitness equipment is heavy and bulky – and that is precisely what makes transport expensive.

Here is the breakdown of the shipping costs:

Fair and transparent: Many shops hide shipping costs in the product price. We don't – you only pay what the transport actually costs. That's why our product prices stay low.

Therefore, the amount in the cart is an estimate. You will see the exact price at checkout as soon as you enter your postal code – even before you pay.
