Aerobic Stepper: Which exercises are actually worth it at home

An aerobic stepper is a portable platform that turns an open space in the living room into a piece of exercise equipment. This guide shows which exercises are truly worthwhile on it and where its limitations lie.

In short

An aerobic stepper is a portable platform for home training: basic steps and knee lifts for the cardiovascular system, step-ups, split squats and hip thrusts for legs and glutes, elevated push-ups for the upper body. The Board at Fitness Flohmarkt measures 98 x 38 cm and can be adjusted in height from 14.5 to 20 cm.

The exercise pool

What can you train with an aerobic stepper?

An aerobic stepper supports four types of exercises: step sequences for the cardiovascular system, single-leg strength exercises for the legs and glutes, support exercises for the upper body, and core work in a supported position. The basic step, knee lifts, and diagonal steps keep the heart rate up without requiring you to jump. Step-ups, split squats with the rear foot on the board, and hip thrusts with the shoulders on the edge load one leg at a time and reveal asymmetries that you might miss with bilateral exercises. Elevated push-ups take the load off the upper body and allow the movement to be trained cleanly before mastering it on the floor. Mountain climbers and forearm planks with the hands on the board work the core while protecting the wrists. All of this happens on a 98 x 38 cm stepping surface and requires no second piece of equipment. Anyone who wants additional resistance can add light dumbbells or a band; which design is suitable for what is clarified by the Resistance Bands Buying Guide.

The table organizes the exercises by height and goal. It is intended as a modular system: two to three rows already make a complete workout.

14.5 or 20 cm

What height do you set on the stepper?

The stepper from Fitness-Flohmarkt has two height settings: 14.5 cm without risers and 20 cm with them. The difference is therefore 5.5 cm, and it is precisely this jump that determines the load per step. At 14.5 cm, you step faster, maintain longer step sequences, and put less strain on the knee; this is the height for beginners, for endurance blocks, and for anyone starting again after a break. At 20 cm, every step becomes a strength exercise: the front of the thighs and the glutes work significantly harder, and the pace inevitably drops. You need this setting for split squats, hip thrusts, and elevated push-ups, because the movement only makes sense there with enough height. A simple rule: as long as you cannot maintain the step sequence cleanly and evenly, the board stays flat. Height is not a training level that you achieve, but a tool for a specific exercise.

Structure instead of choreography

How do you structure a step workout without a class?

A step workout at home works without choreography and without a class. You just need a solid structure, otherwise the workout turns into aimless stepping around. A routine lasting around 20 minutes has proven effective, starting with calm steps, alternating between strength and heart rate in the middle, and tapering off gently. The advantage over a class format: you determine the breaks yourself and can stop any exercise as soon as your form drops. The disadvantage: nobody is counting for you, so a timer is worth having. Keep the blocks the same length and consistently switch sides during single-leg exercises, otherwise you will create the exact asymmetry you actually want to get rid of. If you prefer working by repetitions instead of time, replace the minutes with set sets and leave the order unchanged.

  1. Warm-up, 4 minutes: Basic stride length of 14.5 cm, steady pace, both leading legs the same length.
  2. Step routine, 6 minutes: Basic step, knee lifts, and diagonal steps alternating, 1 minute each, with no pause in between.
  3. Strength Training Block, 6 minutes: Set the board to 20 cm, then alternate between split squats and hip thrusts, 45 seconds per side each.
  4. Core workout, 3 minutes: Forearm plank and mountain climbers with hands on the board, 45 seconds each.
  5. Cooling time, 2 minutes: Back to 14.5 cm, slow basic steps, until your heart rate visibly drops.

Force on the board

What are the benefits of using a stepper in strength training?

The stepper does not replace a weight bench or a rack, but it does three things that would otherwise cost equipment: It raises the feet, it raises the hands, and it gives the back an edge to lean against. This makes single-leg leg exercises, elevated push-ups, and hip thrusts possible without any additional equipment. The easiest way to add extra load to the exercise is by using light dumbbells. The aerobic dumbbells Are there from 1 to 5 kg with a rubberized, hexagonal shape that stays on the board instead of rolling away. For choreography and endurance blocks, 1 to 3 kg per hand are enough; for split squats and step-ups, the heaviest level can be used. As soon as 5 kg per hand becomes too easy, the point is reached where adjustable dumbbells make more sense than additional individual weights.

The Honest Line

When is a stepper the wrong choice?

An aerobic stepper is the wrong choice if you want to jump. A plastic board that’s 14.5 to 20 cm high is designed for stepping, not for landing from the air, and it’s too low to effectively build jumping power. If you want to practice box jumps, use a jump box: The Premium Soft Jump Box It comes in 51, 61, and 76 cm sizes, weighs 23 kg, and features a wooden core with a foam outer layer that protects the shins in case of missteps. The second scenario involves serious endurance training. A stepper has no adjustable resistance, no performance display, and no way to control intensity other than through speed and elevation; anyone who wants to track watts or distance is better off with the cardio machines better served. And third: In cases of acute knee or ankle pain, the question of what level of activity and what range of motion is reasonable should be left to the treating specialist, not to a self-help guide.

Space, Load, Maintenance

How much space and weight capacity does a stepper handle?

Allow more space for the stepper than the board takes up. The tread measures 98 x 38 cm, which is about 0.37 square meters. To exercise, you’ll need about one step’s worth of space in front and behind you—roughly 60 cm—resulting in a clear area of approximately 98 x 158 cm, or just over 1.5 square meters. The board can support up to 200 kg, which should be understood as a static rating: When stepping onto the stepper, forces significantly higher than your body weight are briefly exerted; you should therefore exercise caution when adding extra weight. Weighing 7.2 kg, the stepper can be placed against the wall after your workout. On hardwood or laminate flooring, a floor protection mat beneath it, because otherwise the board shifts and every step goes right through into the neighbor's ceiling. Wear and tear practically only occurs in one place: the clips that hold the monoblocks. A set Replacement clips contains four pieces, and because two clips are needed per monoblock, one set is enough for both blocks of one height level.

Recommendation by situation

What is worth it for whom

Return to step aerobics class

You know the step sequences and want to continue training them at home; stay at 14.5 cm and focus on building endurance rather than height; the Aerobic stepper is enough for that without any additional device.

Home gym with little space

A board that uses 1.5 square meters of training space and takes up almost no space when stowed away is the most affordable way to do single-leg leg exercises. Combined with a few Fitness bands do you completely cover the lower body and activation.

Building strength with light weights

You want to target your glutes and legs. Set the board to 20 cm, work with split squats and hip thrusts, and use the aerobic dumbbells up to 5 kg as additional weight.

Studio, club, and physiotherapy practice

For group fitness classes, a non-slip surface, low weight, and a load capacity of up to 200 kg are what matter. The easiest way to order multiple boards from the same series is via the Stepper category.

Frequently Asked Questions

Aerobic Stepper: The Most Important Answers

What exercises can I do with an aerobic stepper?

On the stepper, you train basic steps, knee raises, and diagonal steps for the cardiovascular system, as well as step-ups, split squats with your rear foot on the board, and hip trusts for legs and glutes. In addition, there are elevated push-ups, forearm planks, and mountain climbers for the upper body and core. With light dumbbells, almost any of these exercises can be additionally weighted.

What height is right for beginners?

For beginners, the low 14.5 cm step is the right choice. It allows for a faster pace, longer step sequences, and puts less strain on the knee. The second level at 20 cm is not a reward for advanced users, but rather the height for strength exercises such as split squats, hip thrusts, and elevated push-ups. Switch based on the exercise, not your fitness level.

How much does an aerobic stepper cost in Switzerland?

The height-adjustable aerobic stepper costs CHF 65.- at Fitness-Flohmarkt and is shipped from the Swiss warehouse in Liestal. If needed, a set of replacement clips is available for an additional CHF 6.-. Anyone who only steps occasionally will not find a more sensible entry-level option; anyone who wants to jump needs a plyo box in a different price range instead.

Is an aerobic stepper also suitable for strength training?

Yes, for unilateral training and bodyweight exercises. The stepper elevates the foot, hand, or back, making split squats, elevated push-ups, and hip thrusts possible. It is not sufficient for heavy strength training: it lacks a rack, stability, and height. As a complement to dumbbells, it is great; as a replacement for a bench, it is not.

How much weight does an aerobic stepper hold?

The stepper from Fitness-Flohmarkt can support up to 200 kg. This specification is static, meaning for standing still. Higher forces briefly occur when stepping on and off, which is why additional weight should be chosen with caution. There is plenty of reserve capacity for training with light dumbbells up to 5 kg per hand.

How loud is step training in an apartment?

Quieter than jumping, but not silent. Every step transmits as impact sound into the ceiling below. A floor protection mat under the board noticeably dampens the sound and at the same time prevents the stepper from moving on smooth floors. Anyone who still needs to be considerate stays on the flat step and avoids jumping variations.
