Basics
What Matters When It Comes to Flooring
Unlike with other equipment, the choice of fitness flooring isn't determined by the material alone, but primarily by three factors: How intense is the training? (determines the required thickness), Which format is right? (single tile, roll, or click system) and Which surface? (Rubber for strength training, foam for gymnastics, artificial turf for speed work).
The most important metric is the Thickness: It determines how much impact the floor can absorb. The heavier the loads and the more frequently items are set down or dropped, the thicker the flooring needs to be. Thin and inexpensive flooring is sufficient for a treadmill; under a barbell, you need something more substantial.
The Right Thickness
What thickness for what load?
As a rule of thumb: the heavier and more dynamic the training, the thicker the flooring. This overview shows which thickness suits which application—from the cardio area to the drop zone for Olympic lifting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Land Purchase: The Most Important Answers
Which flooring is suitable for the free-weight area?
For free weights, racks, and heavy equipment, thick rubber starting at 20 mm is recommended—such as the Connect+ Floor. It absorbs impacts, protects the undercarriage and equipment, and stays in place thanks to its click system. For heavy, repeated lowering from a height, an additional Weight Lifting Platform with 30 mm of cushioning included.
What thickness do I need?
After impact: 6–8 mm are sufficient for cardio and a light home gym, 12 mm foam for gymnastics, 15 mm for mixed equipment areas, 20 mm rubber for free weights and weight rooms. For Olympic lifting with frequent dropping, a 30 mm platform as a drop zone is the right choice.
Tiles, roll or click system — which is better?
Individual tiles are flexible and inexpensive, but loose models can easily slip. A Role covers large areas with few joints and quickly. The Connect+ Click System connects the panels firmly and slip-free and can be expanded or dismantled later — the cleanest solution for permanent surfaces.
Does the floor protect against falling dumbbells?
A 20 mm rubber floor absorbs shocks and reliably protects the subfloor and equipment in the free weight area. For the targeted, repeated dropping of heavy barbells from a height, a dedicated Weight Lifting Platform as a drop zone. Combined with airdrop-capable Bumper Plates, this gives you optimal protection.
Can I install the flooring on parquet, tiles, or concrete?
Yes. The mats protect precisely such surfaces. It is important that the surface is firm, even, clean, and dry. On smooth concrete or tiles, the non-slip underside provides grip; with artificial turf, a cushioning Underlay pad increase walking comfort.
How much material do I need for my area?
Multiply the length by the width in meters and convert to the selected tile size—for 50 × 50 cm, that's 4 tiles per m². For Connect+, that comes out to Requirements calculator on this page automatic: number of panels, area, volume discount, and the necessary edge and corner finishes. For the remaining floors, the formula in the quantity planning section applies.
What is turf and what do I need artificial turf for in the gym?
Turf is an artificial turf designed for training areas. Its high-friction surface is ideal for sprint starts, push and pull sled exercises, and functional training. As a continuous Sprint track or larger Multiplay area. The Connect+ base is even available in a Turf design, allowing rubber and Turf zones to be combined within the same system.
Do I need edge and corner finishes?
Recommended as soon as the surface is free-standing in the room: The beveled Edge and Corner trims They prevent a sharp, jarring edge and create a smooth transition to the floor. If the surface is flush with the wall on all sides, they are not necessary.
Can I combine different floors?
Yes. A typical home gym combines different zones: thick rubber in the free-weight area, thinner mats under cardio equipment, and possibly a Turf track for speed training. Within the Connect+ system, rubber and Turf tiles can even be installed in the same click grid—allowing you to flexibly design areas based on their use.
