You pedal and simultaneously push and pull two moving handles, both of which drive the same fan. The faster and harder you work, the more air the wheel has to move and the harder the pedaling becomes. There is no resistance control and none is needed: the machine adapts to your performance at every moment. That is precisely why it is in almost every functional training gym and exactly why everyone hates it after thirty seconds. If you are still unsure which equipment category actually fits your space, the Overview of all buying guides when sorting.

From the principle follow three practical properties. First, you don't need a power outlet because the energy comes from your legs and the console runs on battery. Second, there are hardly any wearing parts because nothing rubs. Third, the movement is gentle on the joints because there is no impact. In the Category Bikes and Ergometers Is that why the Air Bikes are next to classic exercise bikes with magnetic resistance, which work in the exact opposite way: there you set the level, while here your pace determines everything.

Purchase decision

For whom is an air bike worth it and for whom is it not?

An air bike is worth it for anyone who wants to combine little time and high intensity: intervals of ten to twenty minutes, warm-ups before strength training, conditioning for hybrid competitions. It is also worth it where multiple people of different performance levels use the same machine, such as in a club, a gym, and a physical therapy practice, because no one has to agree on a single resistance level. It is not worth it if you want to do quiet, long endurance sessions, if you train in a thin-walled apartment, or if you like watching movies while doing it. An air bike is loud, it forces you into an upright, working posture, and it rewards short, hard sessions, not leisurely ones.

Anyone looking for full-body endurance, but who wants to work out more quietly and while sitting, is best off with the AirRower better for CHF 645, but requires planning for a length of 238 cm. Anyone who wants to work their upper body harder and has little floor space should look at the SkiErgometer which, with a footprint of 130 x 60 cm, has a height of 215 cm, however. You can also find all three devices in the Conditioning category, because they play the same role in functional training.

Terms

Air Bike, Assault Bike, Rogue: what do the names mean?

Air bike is the generic term, while Assault Fitness and Rogue are brands within this category. Because Assault models were found in very many gyms for years, the brand name has become established as a synonym in everyday use: anyone looking for an „Assault Airbike“ usually means the type of design and not necessarily the manufacturer. The same applies to the „Rogue Air Bike,“ a US model that frequently appears in forums and which we do not carry. For your decision, the name is secondary. Four things are crucial: frame stability, seating comfort, console, and weight capacity. The rest is the same for all air resistance bikes.

At Fitness-Flohmarkt, that specifically means three machines in three price categories. The Air bike with wind resistance for CHF 590.- is the house brand and covers the principle at the lowest price. The Assault Classic Bike For CHF 995, the Studio Reference has a weight of 44 kg and a load capacity of 155 kg. Above that is the Elite model with a reinforced frame. All three operate with a chain drive, LCD console, and transport wheels.

Models

Which Air Bike is right for you?

The choice depends less on the training effect and more on the duration of use and number of users. The resistance works identically in all three models; the difference lies in the frame, seat, and console. If you train alone and do short intervals two to three times a week, the entry-level model is sufficient. If the machine is in a club or a practice and runs daily with changing users, the heavier Assault chassis pays off because it remains stable during powerful pulls and the bearings are designed for continuous operation. The Assault Elite Bike adds to that a wider seat and a console with Bluetooth, which makes the practical difference for heart rate training with a chest strap.

Entry

Airbike | Air resistance

CHF 590.-

Article number F-54264

LCD display

Chain drive

Horizontally and vertically adjustable seat

The cheapest air resistance bike in the assortment, in a black steel design with rubberized feet and transport wheels. The Assault Classic measures 130 x 60 cm, and the Elite measures 122 x 67 cm. Add to that the space you’ll need yourself: about 40 cm behind the seat for getting on and off, and some room in front for the handlebars. So, with a machine length of 130 cm plus 40 cm for access, the total length is just under 1.70 m; for comfort, you’ll want about 2.00 m, and 1.20 m in width is sufficient. Ceiling height isn’t an issue because you’re working while seated, and the tallest model measures 143 cm. That’s the difference compared to a ski ergometer, which, with a height of 215 cm, often doesn’t fit in many basements.

There’s no sugarcoating the noise. The resistance comes from moving air, and moving air makes noise that increases as your speed goes up. You can dampen vibrations and footstep noise by placing a rubber mat under the machine; the recommended thickness is listed in the Flooring buying guide. The fan noise itself remains. In an apartment with thin walls or neighbors living below you, an ergometer with a magnetic brake from the Endurance and Cardio Category the more honest choice, even if it's less challenging during practice.

Buying Used

Is it worth buying a used Air Bike?

A used Air Bike is attractive, but hard to come by. These machines operate continuously in gyms for years, so well-maintained models rarely make their way back onto the market—and when they do, they sell out quickly. What’s more, while an air resistance bike has few wear-and-tear parts, the chain, bearings, and pedal threads are the areas where years of heavy use take their toll. Therefore, when inspecting any used machine, check that the cranks have no play, that the handlebars move smoothly without creaking, and that the console responds properly. We regularly have used ergometers and indoor bikes in stock, but used Air Bikes are only available sporadically.

In practical terms, this means that if you don't want to wait, you're usually better off buying a new device at the introductory price than an older studio model at half the original price. If you have time, check back regularly at the Bike and Ergometer Overview, where new and used devices are listed together. Used items are marked as such and are inspected before sale.

Recommendation

What is worth it for whom

Home Gym, Tight Budget

You want to do 10-minute interval workouts twice a week and strength training the rest of the time. The faster and harder you pedal and pull, the more air the fan has to move and the harder it gets. You don't adjust anything; the resistance follows your output. This makes the device equally useful for beginners and advanced users alike, because both can reach their limit on the same bike.

</details>

<details class="ffm-faq">
How much space does an air bike need?

The Assault Classic Bike measures 130 x 60 x 127 cm, and the Elite measures 122 x 67 x 143 cm. In addition, you need about 40 cm behind the seat for mounting and dismounting. Therefore, plan for a free space of just under 2.00 m in length and a good 1.20 m in width. Ceiling height is not an issue with the Air Bike.

</details>

<details class="ffm-faq">
Is an Air Bike loud?

Yes, clearly audible. The resistance is created by moving air, and air makes noise. The harder you ride, the louder the fan becomes. An air bike is therefore not a piece of equipment for an apartment with thin walls. You can dampen pedaling noise and vibrations with a rubber mat underneath, but the fan noise remains.

</details>

<details class="ffm-faq">
What is the difference between an air bike and an assault bike?

Air bike is the category, Assault Fitness is a brand within this category. Because the Assault models are found in many gyms, the brand name is often used as a synonym. Technically, the principle is always the same: fan instead of brake, arms and legs simultaneously, no power connection required.

</details>

<details class="ffm-faq">
Are there used air bikes available?

Rare. Air bikes are used hard and long in studios, and correspondingly few return to the market in good condition. In the bike and ergometer category you regularly find used ergometers, whereas used air bikes appear only sporadically. Anyone looking for one checks the category periodically or opts for a new device.

</details>

<details class="ffm-faq">
Does an air bike need electricity?

No. The resistance comes from your own power generation, the console runs on a battery. This means you can put the bike in the garage, the basement, or under a porch without needing a power outlet nearby. Transport wheels for moving it around are included with all three models.

</details>

<details class="ffm-faq">
Air Bike or rowing machine: which is better?

Both are full-body machines with air resistance. The air bike is more compact, technically undemanding, and immediately intense. The air rower requires some technique, needs significantly more space at 238 cm in length, and places a greater demand on the pulling muscles. Anyone who wants maximum intensity without a learning curve chooses the bike.

</details>

Ready for ten honest minutes?

Compare the three air bikes and the remaining exercise bikes directly next to each other, with all current prices and stock information.

View all bikes and ergometers

About the author

Dominic Bertschin is Head of Marketing at Fitness-Flohmarkt in Liestal.
